The Porsche 992 Sport Classic is here and makes the hearts of many Porsche fans beat faster. After all, Porsche buyers have a sense of tradition. Vehicles with classic design borrowings are therefore always in hot demand and sell out very quickly. For months, prototype images of a Porsche 992 with the classic duck tail have been appearing. Now the time has finally come! Porsche has launched the 992, its second 911 Sport Classic. We have summarized the most important information for you.

The first Porsche 911 Sport Classic was available in the 997 series

The first Porsche 911 Sport Classic was launched in 2009. Porsche presented the car for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA) in September. It had a classic looking duck tail, Fuchs wheels, a bit more power and all kinds of special equipment. The customers’ response was tremendous! Within 48 hours, Porsche sold all 250 vehicles. Despite an MSRP on a par with the Porsche 997 Turbo at just over 200,000 euros. Today, the Porsche 997 Sport Classic is among the most sought after Porsches. If you want to get hold of a nice model, you have to invest at least 150,000 euros above the new price. That puts its price tag to a level, similar to the Porsche 911 R‘s!

The Porsche 992 Sport Classic is limited to 1,250 cars

Again and again, prototypes based on the Porsche 992 with the distinctive rear spoiler in ducktail design appeared. The fact that these were very close-to-production vehicles is now apparent. The wide turbo body with at the rear apron of the 992 Turbo S immediately catches the eye. But there is also a lot to see at the front. The front apron also comes from the 992 Turbo. This is followed by an independent front hood whose beading is also continued on the roof. In this way, the typical double dome of classic racing cars is cited.

The double-dome roof is also a detail with a motorsport connection: Tall racing drivers used to bulge the roofs accordingly in order to have sufficient headroom when wearing a helmet. This modern roof design alludes to this. The Porsche design concept 911 Panamericana from 1989, the Carrera GT and the 911 Sport Classic also had a roof shape like this. Today, the double-dome roof is a typical design feature of many small-series Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur and 911 GT models.

Interesting detail: The wheels are now center lock wheels. Loyal brand fans have already guessed – the classic Fuchs wheel is therefore not to be seen on the Porsche 992 Sport Classic. The launch car was adorned with the same 5-spoke wheel as the 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition. Porsche also announced that it would follow up with two more cars in this Heritage Design Strategy christened model lineup. The 992 Sport Classic is now limited to 1,250 vehicles. Incidentally, it comes with an exclusive chronograph in Sport Classic design.

With 550 hp, it is the most powerful manual Porsche

Porsche surprised the experts with the engine. We also assumed that the technology of the Porsche 992 GTS with a 3.0 liter turbo engine would be used for the most part. But we thought wrong! The Porsche 992 Sport Classic gets an independent 3.7 liter power unit with a whopping 550 hp and thus even surpasses the GT3. It can officially call itself the most powerful manual Porsche. A 7-speed manual transmission with auto-blip function, i.e. automatic intermediate throttle when downshifting, is offered. However, a PDK is available upon customer request. Sports exhaust system and PASM are of course standard.

The Porsche 992 Sport Classic is available to order now. As an alternative to the exclusive Sport Gray Metallic, the new 911 Sport Classic is also available in plain black, Agate Gray Metallic, and Gentian Blue Metallic. Painted double stripes on the front hood, roof and rear spoiler in light sport gray emphasize the sporty look. From October, according to Porsche, Paint to Sample will be on order. The interior comes with chic Pepita seating. They are framed by the so-called Bi-Color Semianilin leather upholstery in Black/Classic Cognac.

The price for the Porsche 992 Sport Classic is steep at over 270,000 euros. But in return, you get a beguilingly beautiful retro design with 356-inspired instruments and Pepita on the inside, sports grey metallic and ducktail trim on the outside. And the performance will not be bad either, thanks to the lush performance boost.

A modern car with classic design touches is definitely on trend. Even the Porsche Club of America’s recently shown Porsche 911 Classic Club Coupe is in the same vein. Produced on the basis of the 996, this one-off comes with a duck tail, double-dome roof and Fuchs wheels. However, this very 1998 Carrera Coupe was unceremoniously fitted with the powertrain of a 996.2 GT3.
