To mark 100 years of the Le Mans 24h race, Porsche unveiled a new special model. The Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Le Mans Centenaire Edition is inspired by the Porsche 356 SL and the 911 GT1 ’98 – two influential winning cars in Porsche’s history. The modern “gentleman driver” vehicle, as Porsche calls it, is available exclusively in France and is limited to 72 units. Its base price is 237,819 euros.
Many cornerstones of Porsche’s history go back to the world’s most famous 24-hour race. Time and again, the Zuffenhausen teams led by Peter Falk and Norbert Singer have brought overall victories back home. That’s why Porsche is paying tribute to the 24-hour classic at the Sarthe with the new special 911 Carrera GTS Le Mans Centenaire Edition.
Porsche was inspired by two special vehicles. First, the Porsche 356 SL, with which the Zuffenhausen-based company achieved its first class victory at Le Mans in 1951. The Centenaire proudly displays its starting number 46 on the side. Then there is the Porsche 911 GT1 ’98, the first winning Porsche after the Porsche 956/962C’s Group C dominance.
“The 911 Carrera GTS Le Mans Centenaire Edition is the result of the expertise and shared passion of our teams at Porsche France, Style Porsche and Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur.”
Michael Meuer, CEO Porsche France
Commenting on the development, Porsche France CEO Michael Meurer said that the design elements of the winning cars have been reinterpreted and integrated into a modern “gentleman driver”. Porsche’s exclusive special model, for example, also wears the color Le Mans Silver Metallic (7SD). It reinterprets the 356 SL’s color from the ’50s.
In the press release for the 911 Carrera GTS Le Mans Centenaire Edition, Porsche also names the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) as an important partner in the realization. France’s largest automobile club has hosted the 24-hour race on the Sarthe for decades.
Pierre Fillon, Chairman of the ACO, says: “The history of the Le Mans 24 Hours is closely linked to that of Porsche. A prestigious brand that celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. This market edition is a great tribute to the world’s greatest endurance race. We thank Porsche for its commitment to endurance racing and for always giving their all to keep us automotive fans dreaming.”
As the abbreviation GTS suggests, the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Le Mans Centenaire Edition is based on the Carrera GTS of the current generation 911, the 992. In concrete terms, this means a bi-turbo six-cylinder boxer engine and a choice of 7-speed manual transmission or 8-speed PDK.
The rear side windows are covered with decorative film. This gives the impression that they are the Louvers air intakes. Its wheels are painted in Aurum somewhat of an eye-catcher. Otherwise, a 24h Le Mans logo with a laurel wreath adorns the trunk lid. Another badge in the shape of the Le Mans race track and an anniversary logo on the B-pillar complete the exterior design.
Tasteful with racing references – Yes, Porsche has really created a gentleman driver here!
The interior is dominated by graphite blue leather and corduroy in the same color. The carbon bucket seats’ tracks thus bear the same color scheme as those in the historic long-distance racer. Additionally, the steering wheel is also graphite blue with 12 o’clock markings in chalk. Also in chalk are the dials in the instrument cluster and the SportChrono clock as well as the decorative stitching.
The new special model will be sold exclusively through the French Porsche Centers. However, you will probably have to be quick to get your hands on one of the only 72 Le Mans 911s. It was not yet known on the day of the presentation how many of the 237,819 euro special models have already been sold.
The seat fabric in graphite-blue corduroy and the Louvers air intakes on the side windows were borrowed from the Porsche 356 SL.
