A Porsche 997 GT2 itself is already quite a rare thing to see. To see one of those cars appear on the market is always an interesting proposition. But what if you can buy the car, that none other than Valentino Rossi bought new for himself in 2008? This very car is now available with Röhrle Mobility from Baden-Württemberg. So, shortly after the 46th birthday of the legend VR46, you can get an important piece of not only Porsche’s history, but the most famous motorcycle racer’s of all time.
This basalt black Porsche 997 GT2 is one of only 1,242 examples. From 2006 to 2009, it was the absolute spearhead of the 997 model series. With its 530 hp bi-turbo engine and rear-wheel drive it was considered to be a widow maker. As the original Italian documents prove, its first owner was then-Yamaha MotoGP rider Valentino Rossi. He specced his black beauty with the optional Clubsport package and – as a nod to his yellow number 46 – yellow seat belts.
Valentino Rossi chose Basalt Black Metallic for his newly purchased 997 GT2 during his most successful MotoGP season in 2008.
The brake calipers are also painted yellow. Although that hasn’t been an exclusive option. All 997 GT2 were equipped with the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) from the factory. Another option were the painted side skirts. On the regular GT2, they were black plastic panels. On the inside, the car treats its driver with a blend of Alcantara and black leather. Still quipped with the PCM sat-nav and the electronic suspension (PASM) the GT2 offers the basic creature comforts.
Even though Rossi could have probably chosen any Ferrari he would have liked, thanks to his bond with Fiat, he still chose to treat himself with a Porsche.
Rossi, a seven time motorbike world champion at that time, was contracted by the Fiat Yamaha team back in the day. His connections to sponsor Fiat were so deep, that Rossi tested Michael Schumachers Formula 1 cars on numerous occasions. In 2006 he even considered a switch to F1. Considering that, he might have had the opportunity to basically choose the Ferrari road car, he liked. Yet, Valentino treated himself with a Porsche in summer 2008 and registered it on August 6. Afterwards, he went on to claim his eighth world championship title with the most successful season of his 26-year-long career on two wheels.
After Rossi’s ownership, the car came to Germany and had two other owners since. Its speedometer now shows 30,000 kilometers. The GT2 therefore sits in a nice range, where you won’t need to worry about mileage too much – in both directions. There’s no “need” to store it immediately as it’s only on delivery mileage. On the other hand, a couple joyous trips won’t do any harm either.
Of course, if a car was once owned by a legend like “The Doctor”, as Valentino Rossi was known, it won’t come cheap. Its new price was probably something around the 200,000 Euro mark, when it was delivered by Porsche Centre Pesaro. Röhrle Mobility asks 254,990 Euros for the fastest Porsche 911 built to that point. It might only be an academic fact, but the sheer capability to reach 329 kph top speed is mind-boggling. Anyway, the chance to own a car once owned by Valentino Rossi won’t come up too often, that’s for sure. And who knows, maybe you’ll find a way to get in touch with its famous first owner. As whoever will own the car, at least gets Vale’s former address through the original Italian title…
