Storing vintage cars and cars Checklist – how to do it correctly:
- Thoroughly clean the car – underbody and engine compartment are also a plus now – and make sure it is clean and most importantly dry.
- Check the paintwork, underbody and wheel arches for stone chips and repair minor damage or have it repaired. This prevents rust and preserves the paint.
- Fill up your car before storing it to prevent rust on the tank cap. Newer vehicles now mostly have a plastic tank. In this case, filling up is not necessary.
- Increase the air pressure to 3 bar – even better: -Tire shoes
- If it has been a while since the last customer service, change the engine oil again – acids and other aggressive substances can have formed over time, which can attack the material during the idle period.
- If the winter quarters do not have heating facilities, fill up the cleaning water to be on the safe side. In this way you prevent the tank, pipes and pumps from freezing.
- Vacuum the interior and clean washable surfaces with a damp cloth. Make sure everything is dry again. Leave a window ajar to ensure ventilation. So bad smells don't stand a chance.
- Do not apply the handbrake – the brake pads could become stuck over the period of storage.
- disconnect battery or not? Several factors are decisive here: If the room temperature is constantly around 10 degrees or more, disconnecting is not necessary. Charge the battery fully. To be on the safe side, you can also connect a battery charger trickle. The general rule is: the lower the temperature in the storage room, the longer it has been parked and the older the car, the better it is to disconnect or even remove the battery.
- Finally, you can store your mobile treasure under an air-permeable cover until spring.
