The Porsche Carrera GT
It was before sunrise in the early hours of September 28, 2000, when Porsche presented the Carrera GT concept car to the world press in Paris. Walter Röhrl was at the wheel of the new super sports car. He drove the V10 mid-engined car across the Place Charles-de-Gaulle, which is even better known as the Place de l’Étoile because its cobblestones form a star from which the Arc de Triomphe rises. Röhrl’s job was to transfer the sheer power of the engine to the wet and slippery pavement of the square via the rear axle on this rainy morning in front of the eyes of the international media. The two-time rally world champion mastered the matter with ease: the pictures of Röhrl in the open Carrera GT on the way from the Arc de Triomphe to the Louvre, escorted by French motorcycle police, went around the world as an automotive sensation. With this study, Porsche had defined the new status quo of sports cars and pushed the boundaries of what was possible. Children hung posters of the study in their rooms and many enthusiasts wanted to order it. But it didn’t exist yet. Porsche had to finish developing the Carrera GT and then finally build it. In 2000, this sports car was nothing more than a bold vision, created from the modules of a new LMP 2000 racing car, which was actually supposed to compete for victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. For cost reasons, the decision was made not to return to Le Mans for the time being. This is how the idea of shaking up the sports car world with the technical components of the internally designated 9R3 was born. This was followed by the development of the study shown at the Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris.
There were various reasons why another two and a half years passed before the production version made its debut at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show. One of these was the aerodynamics: the appearance of the production version was not to change much from the study. In order to press the production car, which would later reach speeds of 330 km/h, safely onto the road, a sophisticated aerodynamic concept had to be developed. The only thing visible is the electrically extendable rear wing. Apart from that, the entire carbon underbody is covered. Together with a rear diffuser, the underbody geometry creates a ground effect like that of a racing car, which literally glues the car to the road. The biggest challenge, however, was manufacturing the monocoque chassis and the engine mount, which for the first time in a production Porsche were made entirely from lightweight, high-strength CFRP. In 2003, Porsche set up a manufacturing facility at the new Leipzig plant. Other refinements were added, such as seat shells made of Kevlar and thus also very light, ceramic brake discs, double wishbone pushrod axles and the world’s first two-disk dry clutch made of ceramic. With a disc diameter of 169 millimeters, this heavy-duty clutch is particularly compact and allows a very low center of gravity to be achieved for the V10 and the 6-speed manual transmission. Compared to the study, the displacement was increased from 5.5 to 5.7 liters and the power to 612 hp. Compared to the study, the production vehicle was even more purist thanks to Walter Röhrl’s influence. The fully digital displays were replaced by classic instruments and instead of a gearbox with shift paddles, the Carrera GT got the manual six-speed manual gearbox with a high-positioned gear knob.
About the vehicle offered here:
This Porsche Carrera GT is number 147 of 1,270 units ever built and was first delivered in Belgium in 2005. Shortly after delivery, its owner decided to optimize the car for the racetrack. So he had the GPR company make a one-off model with which he wanted to conquer the racetracks of Europe. The conversion costs at the time amounted to over 220,000 euros. The task given to GPR was ambitious: nothing less than to build the world’s fastest Carrera GT for the racetrack. This was achieved by using a Motec control unit, new, tailor-made wishbones and tie rods, and a new braking system from AP Racing. In addition, new pedals and a special high-performance clutch were installed. In addition, there were magnesium rims from BBS, an automatic fire extinguishing system and a fuel system according to motorsport specifications. The owner at the time had concrete plans for the Carrera GT, for example he wanted to use the car in the World Endurance Championship, but this was prevented by the rules, as the massive power of the car meant that no adjustment through the so-called “Balance of Performance” was possible. The owner’s plans thus fell through and the Carrera GT-R remained unused in his collection. After 10 years, the owner parted with the unique piece, which was auctioned off at the Bonhams auction house on October 9, 2015. The car was then purchased by our company, but was not used for years. The car was serviced in autumn 2021. At the beginning of 2024, almost 20 years after the first delivery, the decision was made to restore the collector’s item to its original form, which was easily possible thanks to the storage of all original components. The vehicle will undergo a major customer service before delivery by the Porsche Centre Stuttgart, and the manufacturer’s upcoming recall campaign will also be carried out in this context. With a mileage of just 1,700 kilometers, this Carrera GT is now for sale.
