The Porsche 987 Boxster Spyder is a remarkable sports car. Produced until 2011, this version of the Boxster is known for its lightweight construction, enhanced performance and purist driving experience. The model pays homage to the original Spyder philosophy, which revolves around driving pleasure, agility and precise handling.
The 987 Boxster Spyder is distinguished from standard Boxster models by its minimalist design and weight-saving measures. Porsche has managed to save around 80 kilograms in weight compared to the standard Boxster S. This has been achieved by removing unnecessary luxuries, such as the air conditioning (optionally available), the audio system (optionally available), and the conventional door handles, which have been replaced by lightweight fabric pulls.
One of the most striking features of the Boxster Spyder is its unique manual soft-top. Designed to keep weight down, this roof design offers a more classic convertible experience, although putting it on requires a bit more effort than a conventional power-operated roof. The car also features a low windscreen and the attractive rear boot lid, which together contribute to a streamlined and sporty look.
Under the bonnet of the 987 Boxster Spyder is a 3.4-litre six-cylinder boxer engine, which produces 320 hp. This is a slight increase from the 310 hp of the Boxster S.
Thanks to its lower weight and powerful engine, the Spyder can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, which is an impressive feat for a car in this class. The driving experience in the Boxster Spyder is further enhanced by the sports suspension, which is lowered by 20 mm compared to the standard Boxster. This provides a lower centre of gravity and sharper handling.
What really sets the Porsche 987 Boxster Spyder apart is the pure and unfiltered driving experience it offers. Without the distractions of modern luxury and focusing on the essence of motoring, every drive in the Spyder feels like an event. Its direct steering feel, responsive engine and communicative suspension ensure intense driving pleasure, both on twisty mountain roads and on the track.
The Spyder is designed for the purist, someone who enjoys simplicity and direct contact with the road. Its lightweight construction contributes to a sense of agility and precision that is hard to match by heavier, more luxurious sports cars.
