The vehicle in detail

On 26 March 1960, Porsche celebrated its first overall victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring with a silver Type 718 RS 60 Spyder driven by Hans Herrmann and Olivier Gendebien. This ‘giant killer’ was able to beat far more powerful offerings from Chevrolet, Maserati, and even Ferrari. To celebrate Hans Herrmann’s 80th birthday and this truly watershed moment for the small sports car manufacturer, the occasion was commemorated with only 1960 special edition Boxster RS 60 Spyder being produced for the Spring of 2008.

Each special edition was distinguished from the standard Boxster S by a more aggressively styled Porsche SportDesign front and rear bumpers, all-red tail light lenses, RS 60 Sydper stainless steel door sills, and black trim surrounding the windshield. Wheel spacers moved the 19-inch SportDesign wheels out for a more prominent position on the car. This particular Spyder, car number 758, is finished in GT Silver Metallic with a Carrera red leather interior and matching folding fabric roof that incorporates a defrosting glass rear window. Additional features include Bose High-End Sound Package, Sport Chrono Package, automatic climate control, and heated seats. The suspension is controlled by Porsche Active Stability Management (PASM), which ensures that a sporting and comfortable ride is maintained at all times with its two selectable suspension modes. The cowl over the instrument cluster was removed to expose the three circular gauge pods, adding to the racing car flair of the interior. Sharing a similar engine to the equivalent Boxster S, this RS 60 is powered by a 3.4-liter flat-six engine with a factory sports exhaust with dual tips producing 303-horsepower and 251 lb-ft of torque, an increase of eight horsepower over the Boxster S. The six-speed manual shift lever is fitted with a polished shift knob unique to the RS 60s.

According to the accompanying Carfax report, this RS 60 Spyder was sold new by Porsche Exchange of Highland Park, IL, and would remain with its original owner until it was sold in 2010. The second owner kept it until late 2013 when the car was relocated to New York, where it would stay until 2017, before going to California and ultimately being purchased by the current owner in early 2019. With only 47,641 miles shown, a major service was performed in 2019, where the clutch, water pump, ignition coils, spark plugs, oil seals, drive belt, and pulleys were replaced for just over $6,000. Collectible from new, today this Boxster RS 60 Sypder presents well with only 50,573 miles from new, and is accompanied by a factory hardtop in matching GT Silver paint, a clean Carfax report, wind deflector, and owner’s manual.
