It remains hard to admit to many a 911 follower, but secretly the first generation Porsche Boxster is at least as pleasing to the eye as big brother 996 from that same era. Perhaps even tastier… This is the facelift model based on the original, codenamed 986. The subtly altered Boxster can be recognized, among other things, by its indicators behind white glass (a la Boxster S), aerodynamically designed air intakes at the bottom of the front bumper, body-color painted bars in the air vents behind the doors, as well as the rear bumper spoiler containing a larger central exhaust that is rounded at the top and flattened at the bottom. The Boxster is a classic in the making. In that respect, this example certainly has its composition with it: a deep dark green Lagogrun metallic body and 17-inch alloy wheels with Boxster S II design and a beautifully contrasting silver color. What a chic combo! The soft-top is traditionally black and folds electrically behind the seats. Once open, you immediately notice the transparent deflector between the roll bars: it serves to keep the wind out of the interior as much as possible. There is therefore hardly any threshold for going topless…
Equipment
On board the Porsche 986 there are no surprises in terms of decoration: you sit on black leather seats. The fact that both seats are heated is a pleasant extra. Should the windblocker not sufficiently shield the driver + passenger from a cold breeze, then this can be compensated with a push of a button (or two). Are you a fair-weather driver? Then the automatic air conditioning is an option that will appeal all the more. And the stylish roadster has a practical side too: a trip computer, parking assistance system, Cruise Control and original CD Box/storage are also included. The alarm system, meanwhile, should prevent anyone other than you from inadvertently trying out the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system. Because, once experienced for yourself, you really don’t want to give up the Boxster….
Tech
PSM on or off, this roofless two-seater is king stability anyway. This is because the Boxster’s engine has taken up a position between the seats and the rear axle. In short, ideal for ideal weight distribution. This combined with an ultra-low center of gravity and rear-wheel drive makes the roadster all muscle. A whopping 228 horsepower is given to the rear rubber once the throttle is full on. That’s 8 horses more than before the facelift. Coupled with some other fine tuning, this Porsche manages to shave 2 tenths of a second off the 0-100 km/h sprint, bringing it to just 6.4 seconds. The top speed of 253 km/h is also 3 km/h higher. Also characteristic of this model is the fact that the manual transmission is considerably smoother than the automatic. Fortunately, because the purist will always have a soft spot for the manual version! Speaking of pure: the raw sound of the turbocharged 2.7 liter 6-cylinder boxer can be recognized by thousands. Wet or dry, you will rumble, bubble and plop your way through the summer. May we witness this?
