As is so often the case, in general and also at Porsche, the best comes at the end. What Porsche offered with the 997 GTS followed this maxim. The 911 as the ultimate jack of all trades. Classic naturally aspirated engine, rear-wheel drive, factory performance upgrade, convertible for the nice weather.
By today’s standards, the 997 is still small and handy and with a 3.8-liter naturally aspirated engine, manual transmission, rear-wheel drive and a power boost to 408 hp as a water-cooled 911, it is still relatively close to the original air-cooled 911 driving experience. In fact, if you have driven a 991 or 992, it feels like the last “old-school” 911 that still requires a strong hand, but rewards you with unbridled driving pleasure.
The additional high level of everyday practicality and safety features and, in the convertible version, the nice weather make the 997 GTS perhaps the best and most desirable water-cooled Porsche with a naturally-aspirated engine and in a civilian outfit.
From 08/2011 to about 07/2013, the GTS was a company car at Porsche AG in Weissach. After that, it was sold by the Porsche Center in Bonn to a prominent Porsche enthusiast from Essen. Via the PZ Siegen, the car came to its 3rd owner, who is personally known to me, in 05/2016. Both previous owners are known to the respective PZ as permanent customers and have hardly ever driven the Porsche more than 5,000 km.
