The story of the Porsche Mezger engine goes way back in the company’s history, where it became a practical solution to a pressing problem.
During the development of the 986 Boxster and the 996 version of the 911, Porsche realised that they could no longer use an air-cooled engine. The company had reached the limits of air cooling in terms ofIt was then purchased for a major car collection in Austria, which is where Semler Premium Copenhagen bought it.
Therefore, a water-cooled flat-six, the M96, was developed for use in these vehicles.
The basis for the Mezger engine was the GT1-98 race engine that powered the iconic Porsche GT1 to victory at Le Mans in 1998. This engine can be traced back to the one used in the Porsche 959, which combined 4-valve and water-cooled cylinder heads with air-cooled cylinders.
The Mezger engine incorporated a number of features previously developed by ‘Hans Mezger’, which is why the engine was named after him.
