The 1998 Porsche 996 marks a significant milestone in Porsche's history. As part of the first generation of the 996, it replaced the air-cooled 911 models of the 993 series. Equipped with a 3.4-liter flat-six engine, it produced 296 hp. Interestingly, the 996 was the first Porsche 911 with a water-cooled engine and a self-supporting aluminum body. Although it was controversial due to these innovations and many Porsche enthusiasts criticized the loss of the air-cooled character, the Porsche 996 proved to be a commercial success, as it sold over 170,000 units, making it the most successful Porsche 911 of all time.
