A particularly defining feature of the 996 was the introduction of a fully water-cooled engine, replacing the air-cooled engine of previous models. This decision was necessary to meet increasingly strict emissions and noise regulations, and to increase performance and reliability. The 3.4-litre engine in the original 996 produced 300 hp, while later versions, such as the 996 Turbo, reached up to 420 hp.

The design of the 996 was also revolutionary. Porsche decided to completely redesign the 911 to make the car more aerodynamic and modern. The 996 was the first 911 to feature an integrated bumper and headlights in the so-called "fried egg" design, which were also used on the Boxster (986). This shared design philosophy helped reduce production costs and improve the company's profitability.

The interior of the 996 was also redesigned to offer more comfort and modern technology. Higher quality materials, a new infotainment system and improved ergonomics made the 996 a more comfortable and everyday sports car.The 996 model range was diverse. In addition to the Carrera and Carrera 4, there were more powerful variants such as the Carrera 4S, the Turbo and the GT2. The 996 GT3, introduced in 1999, was a road-legal racing car that clearly demonstrated Porsche's motorsport DNA.
