Model History
The Porsche 996 Carrera 4 was introduced in 1998 as part of the fifth generation of the Porsche 911 and marked a significant turning point in the model's history. For the first time, Porsche used a water-cooled engine instead of the traditional air-cooled powerplant, resulting in improved performance figures and better cooling. The Carrera 4 offered all-wheel drive, which significantly improved traction and stability, especially in adverse weather conditions. Externally, the 996 was distinguished by its new front end with the characteristic "fried egg" headlights. Over the course of its production life, the model underwent several technical and visual revisions, including an increase in power. The 996 Carrera 4 is now considered the entry into the modern era of the Porsche 911, although it was controversial at the time due to its new design and engine choice.
