The vehicle in detail

Porsche’s first iteration of the limited edition “Sport Classic” 911 trim was during the 997 generation. The first water-cooled Porsche to wear the legendary “Ducktail” spoiler of the 2.7 RS from 1973, it was a highly specified Carrera S with every sporting option checked and a unique body kit. Only 250 were produced, and it was never officially offered stateside – although a few did make their way in over the years. The second time that Sport Classic name was brought out was in the spring of 2022 during 992 production. This time, the car was based on a Turbo, and although the ducktail wing remained, the overall car was far more special than the 997 variant. With a production run of 1,250 cars, Porsche came to their senses and offered this Sport Classic in the United States too.

This 2023 Porsche 911 Sport Classic was delivered new to Porsche of Plano in Plano, TX, and shows 1,200 miles at the time of cataloging. The dash placard indicates this is car number 806 out of the total production run of 1,250 units. Finished in Agate Gray Metallic, the Sport Classic features the 992 Turbo’s wider fenders (sans vents) and a unique ducktail spoiler with a modified grille to feed air into the engine bay. The large Fuchs-style wheels also harken back to the 2.7 RS, and the double-bubble roof and gold badging also play into classic Porsches from the brand’s history.

The interior features the special “Heritage Design” styling that was developed for this car – featuring Classic Cognac tan seats with Pepita inserts and black leather on the dash, steering column surround, and door toppers. Green text on the dials is also an homage to classic 911s and looks great from behind the wheel – especially when paired with the dark wood grain dash accents. Although this car may be a tribute to the lightweight, stripped-down sports cars of Porsche’s past, the Sport Classic still retains many of the comfort and convenience features you would hope for, making it a great grand tourer. Items like Night Vision Assist, a Burmester High-End surround sound system, Lane Keep Assist, and 18-way power seats.

Powering the 911 Sport Classic is a de-tuned version of the 911 Turbo’s 3.7-liter twin-turbocharged Flat 6. The reason that Porsche had to pull some power was that, unlike the Turbo, which is PDK only, the Sport Classic is only available with a 7-speed manual gearbox. In this guise, it produces 542 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque – which was evidently the maximum this gearbox could handle but still makes it the most potent manual gearbox equipped 992 available. This is made even more thrilling from behind the wheel when you factor in that Porsche elected to make this a rear wheel drive only car, which reduces weight and results in quite a bit of tail-out fun when the turbos are spooled.

Although Porsche has debuted several different limited-run 992s throughout the generation, each has a very different brief. The Sport Classic is perhaps the ultimate grand-touring 911 Porsche has built that is perfect for enjoying long drives over winding roads. With a perfect combination of performance, comfort and classic touches, there is no doubt that the Sport Classic will go down as one of Porsche’s great cars from the 992 generation and with that, one of the best 911s of all time.
