The first 911 Turbo was launched in 1974, and every subsequent generation has had its own supercharged version. In terms of power, inflation is considerable: while the first 911 Turbo boasted just 260 hp, the911 Turbo type 991 boasts 520 hp, and even 560 hp on the Turbo S in Phase I.
Still turbocharged by two variable-geometry turbos (a unique feature on a petrol engine), the flat-six features VarioCam Plus variable valve timing and variable intake valve lift. Torque rises to 750 Nm at 2,200 rpm with the overboost function. The PDK gearbox has been reworked for greater speed, but retains its dual-clutch architecture and “6+1” gear spacing, with an overdrive seventh gear for highway use (not available in Sport or Sport Plus modes).
The performance of the 991 Turbo S is phenomenal, with a top speed of 318km/h and a 0 to 100 time of 3 seconds and 1 tenth, all with the ease of a modern 911.
