This quickly turned into one of the most popular variants of 911 as it offered much of the open-air experience of a full convertible, without sacrificing structural rigidity or adding a huge amount of weight. But during the 993 generation, the Targa moved away from the removable roof panel and in its place, an all-glass roof with a large sliding sunroof-style panel. Although a nice option, these Targas were notably heavier and featured an entirely different roofline to accommodate for the new top mechanism, which led to the Targa becoming a rarely-selected option. This style of Targa continued through the 997 generation and, although they spurred a bit of a cult following, they were not particularly popular. So with the 991, Porsche set out to bring the Targa back in a big way.
This 2019 Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS is from the updated 991.2 generation and is finished in black over black leather/Alcantara interior with Carmine red stitching. Showing just 2,544 miles at the time of cataloging, this Targa 4 GTS benefits from $29,890 in factory options and looks stunning throughout. The centerpiece of the 991 Targa is the retro-looking basket handle Targa bar and large, domed rear window, which opens when the automated Targa panel is activated. Watching the mechanism work is like the movement of a fine mechanical watch, with dozens of little pieces all working in sync to move the top on and off the top of the car in under 20 seconds. In this example, the Targa bar is finished in black as are the wheels, which gives this car a very nice monochromatic look.
The interior of the Targa is typical 911 in that it is a very nice and well thought out place to be. This example was optioned with the GTS interior package which features extremely comfortable 18-way power seats, that have black leather outers, paired with black Alcantara centers. Perfectly set up to be a daily driver sports car, this Targa is equipped with desirable options such as the Bose surround sound stereo, front axle lift system, heated multi-function steering wheel and lane change assist. These options make this 911 a great place to spend your time in traffic, but when the road opens up, you can still enjoy everything that makes a 911 GTS so great.
Powering this Targa 4 GTS is a 3.0-liter Twin-turbocharged flat-6 that, in GTS trim produces 444 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Although there was initially some pushback against the turbocharging of most 911 variants, in truth they produce a car that is exceptionally fast in any situation and doesn’t require you to rev the car out, to get around a slower car in traffic. This engine is connected to a 7-speed PDK gearbox which then sends power to all 4 wheels for optimum performance in all conditions. One of the great features available on these more modern 911s is the addition of rear steer, which this car is equipped with- not only does this help the car feel more agile in tight corners or parking lots, but also makes it more surefooted on the highway, really increasing the dual nature of the vehicle.
If you want a single car to fulfill all of your daily needs, it’s pretty hard to beat a 911 Targa 4 GTS. This example is presented in a great, stealthy color combination and benefits from a host of desirable options, making it the perfect dual-purpose vehicle. If you have always enjoyed motoring with the wind in your hair, but don’t like the look of a conventional canvas top, or just want something different, the Targa 4 GTS is hard to beat.
