The vehicle in detail

When announced on 12 February 1993, the Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 was to be the highest-performance regular production offering they had ever produced for sale in North America; this single-turbo, rear-engine, rear-drive, widebody 911 produced an impressive 355 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque. Porsche achieved these staggering numbers by swapping out the 3.3-liter engine from the previous Turbo model with a modified 3.6-liter engine from the recent line of 911 Carreras. In total, fewer than 1,500 Turbo 3.6 examples were produced for the world, with less than a third of those reaching North American streets.

In September of 1993, well into the production run of the Turbo, Porsche—together with their Exclusive department—decided to release an even more powerful “S” variant. Rare by design, Porsche estimated they would build fewer than 100 of these 3.6-liter Turbo S models for the world.

Most of these “S” models were to have the new and improved “Flachbau,” or Flatnose, Version II front end, which differed from the earlier Flatnose of the 1980s. By 30 November 1993, final production numbers were announced to dealers; the United States was to receive 39 X85 (Flatnose-equipped) Turbo S coupes. Porsche Cars North America and Porsche Canada, together with their Regional Manager Mr. Winkler, petitioned for a further 17 Turbo S coupes without the Flatnose. Their special request was granted, resulting in among the rarest of all air-cooled Turbo models: the Turbo S “Package” is the most powerful single-turbo, rear-drive 911 ever offered for sale in North America.

The Turbo S “Package” included the 380-horsepower X88 engine modifications inspired by the Andial-built Brumos Racing IMSA engine, with a larger turbocharger, intercooler, fuel injectors, oil coolers, camshaft, and four-pipe exhaust system contributing that additional 25 horsepower at a higher peak rpm (for both power and torque). Additionally, the “Package” cars had the Porsche Exclusive optional X92 Turbo S front spoiler, X93 Turbo S rear spoiler, X99 Turbo S (959-style) rear fender vents, and polished 18-inch three-piece Speedline alloy wheels. This Package cost an additional $20,921 on top of the $99,000 base price for the Turbo.

According to an accompanying internal Porsche Hausmitteilung, this is the very first Turbo S “Package” model by vehicle number, and one of just two delivered in Grand Prix White. Retaining a copy of its original window sticker, and original books and pamphlets, as well as several past bills of sale and service records, the total history of his car is known back to delivery. In addition to the standard Turbo and Turbo S “Package” options, this car was also optioned with a full leather interior in Classic Grey with Black Piping, head restraints with the Porsche crest, wheel caps with colored Porsche crests, remote six-disc changer, and electric sunroof.

Ordered by and briefly enjoyed by the dealer principal of Park Place Porsche in Dallas, Texas, this Turbo S was transferred to, and sold new by, the Houston, Texas Porsche dealer Don McGill Imports Inc. to Dr. William Kalchoff with 385 miles on the odometer. After four years and only 6,524 miles of use, Dr. Kalchoff parted with his Turbo S. The second owner, Angelo Catani, purchased it via a Porsche dealer in Atlanta, Georgia with a full pre-owned warranty, beginning on 28 August 1998.

In 2000, this Turbo S was purchased by Mark Betres of Sewickley, Pennsylvania. Mr. Betres kept the car just two years before trading it in to Auto Palace LLC in Pittsburgh with 12,101 miles on record. On 5 July 2002, it was purchased by its most recent and longest caretaker, a resident of Loves Park, Illinois, who owned two other Turbo S “Package” cars in his collection. The current 13,527 recorded miles are documented by a clean Carfax report, and by various accompanying documents and records.

This is a chance to acquire the rarest and most powerful rear-drive version of the air-cooled 911 Turbo, blending classic 911 styling with an early-1990s Bad Boys twist.
