One of the greatest rarities from the Porsche 964 model series came onto the market in 1993.
Since the 964 RS sold very well in Europe, the Americans shouldn't go away empty-handed either.
Porsche remembered that the twentieth birthday of the 911 Carrera RS from 1973 was just around the corner and also offered an RS for the US market.
To distinguish it from the 964 Carrera RS for the European market, it was given the addition “RS America”.
It was a special series based on the Carrera 2 Coupé because the Carrera RS could not be registered in America.
Porsche hoped to revive sales on the American market with the “America Roadster”, a Carrera 2 convertible in a turbo look with a slimmed-down range of standard equipment.
The first 911 RS America came to the USA in April 1992, but were already assigned to the 1993 model year.
The vehicle was offered $10,000 cheaper than the 911 Carrera 2 Coupé.
The “RS America” only had 4 selectable (and surchargeable) options: air conditioning, radio, electric sunroof and a limited-slip differential. The most striking feature of the “RS America” was the fixed rear spoiler, as was still known from the 911 Carrera 3.2.
The ventilation grilles on the 964 were not black.
In addition, there was the sports suspension (M030) with the tighter turbo springs on the rear axle, the turbo shock absorbers at the front and rear and a thicker front stabilizer bar (22 instead of 20 mm diameter).
In addition, wider 17-inch wheels (M040) were mounted on 7-inch-wide rims at the front and 8-inch-wide rims at the rear. The power steering was also omitted, as were the rear seats.
The front hood was also made of sheet steel and not aluminum like the German RS.
The exterior mirrors had to be adjusted manually.
The savings compared to the curb weight of the German series version of the Carrera 2 amounted to only around ten kilograms and was therefore 1340 kg. The driving performance was also at its level.
Porsche reduced the range to five colors.
The RS America was available in red, black, white, silver metallic and midnight blue metallic. Overall Porsche sold
701 vehicles in the 1993 and 1994 model years. The 964 RS America is also a sought-after rarity on the German market.
