1992 Porsche (911) 964 Carrera RS for sale!

French registration – Chassis n° WPOZZZ96ZNS490168 – Engine n° 62N80503

After almost 20 years of absence, Porsche relaunches the mythical name RS on one of its road cars. The success of the 2.7 RS in the early 1970’s created an idyll for all Porsche enthusiasts: the return of a racing car homologated for road use. The parent company answered their prayers with the presentation of the 964 Carrera RS at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show. The initial goal was to produce 1,000 units, but it was so successful that 2,051 units rolled off the assembly line. Visually, there seems to be little to differentiate it from a 964 Carrera 2, and that is still its strength today! The ground clearance is reduced by 40 mm and the rear bumper is slightly revised, while the interior is stripped down to the bare essentials: the rear seats disappear, the front seats are replaced by Recaro buckets; the carpets, the roof lining and even the sun visors are thinner. All the comfort elements: electric windows, radio and air conditioning are removed. The power steering is also omitted, an attraction that gives a decidedly sporty driving feel. The chassis was redesigned by the Weissach department, which reinforced the welds by hand, lowered the ride height, tightened the suspension and fitted magnesium wheels. Mechanically, the basis is taken from the standard 964 Carrera 2. Cylinders, pistons and flywheel are replaced, the catalytic converter is simply removed and the gear ratios are shortened. All this work allows the 964 Carrera RS to enjoy a gain of 10 horsepower and a loss of 110 kg on the scale! Two versions of the 964 RS were created: the Lightweight, a strict interpretation of a racing car adapted to the road, and the Touring, which incorporates the comfort features of the standard 964 Carrera.

The vehicle in detail

The car we are presenting today is a Lightweight version that was delivered on May 13, 1992 in the Netherlands. Its first French owner, Roland Bervillé, a driver who won the LMGT1 class at the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours, bought the car shortly afterwards. The service book shows a first service on September 10, 1992, at 2,992 kilometers, in France. Roland Bervillé sold the 964 RS to the Almeras brothers at the beginning of 1995, with the aim of buying a 911 RSR from Le Mans. At that time, the FFSA created a new “production GT” grid for its Rally Championship events. Jacques Almeras saw this as an interesting opportunity for a return to the world of rallying and entered our 964 Carrera RS in the 1995 Critérium National des Cévennes. This car was to be Jacques Almeras’ last race car and the very first for his daughter, Cécile Almeras, who made her debut as a teammate. The success is there, since they will win their category!

The FFSA passport of our car dates back to 1995 and shows its Mobil 1 livery, which can also be seen in the period photos of the book “Porsche Almeras” by Jean-Marc Chaillet. At the end of the year, the car is bought by Mr. Leonetti, then it changes hands again in 2001, to come to Paris to Mr. Boulenger. Two other owners will follow before the sale in 2010 to Mr Brunel, who will keep it until 2021. He had not use the car so much, but only on track. The service book shows a regular maintenance, the last service being in November 2021. Our car is still on its original magnesium rims, which is exceptional. The Histovec proves that the mileage announced by the odometer is reliable: about 120,000 kilometers. Its current condition is good, the car has just been completely repainted and its interior is perfectly preserved. The Matter roll bar, probably installed by the Almeras, is still fitted to the car. The technical control has detected a defect in the brakes, requiring a second visit. The current owner has committed to have the problem fixed by a Porsche specialist before the sale. Here is the opportunity to acquire an authentic 964 RS Lightweight with a racing history in the hands of one of the most renowned Porsche tuners.
