Despite sharing a familiar silhouette with earlier G-series 911s, the 964 was Porsche’s most innovative 911 to date. It shared just 15% of its components with its predecessor, and brought technical revolutions and fresh looks to the 911 range.
Utilising a 959-derived electronically controlled all-wheel drive system opened the 911 market to those in more treacherous climates, creating the ultimate alpine sports car. The Carrera 4 would also plant the seed for ultra-high-performance models like the Turbo and Turbo S, to be supplied with all-wheel drive traction.
This 964 Carrera 4 Cabriolet was supplied new in November of 1990 by Lancaster Cambridge. Finished in solid black over a light grey interior. The car sits on a set of 16” Carrera 7-spoke alloy wheels, finished in silver and wrapped in a matching set of Bridgestone tyres. The bodywork, wheels and importantly, the hood, are all in great shape. The hood itself was replaced in the early 2000s.
The interior is primarily finished in light grey. The seats are trimmed with perforated leather centres and contrasting piping, whilst the gearknob, steering wheel and dash are finished in black. There are black overmats to protect the light carpet. Everything functions as it should, including the all-wheel drive and rear spoiler switches.
Under the rear decklid, you’ll find a 3.6-litre air-cooled flat-six. It produces around 250 bhp and 230 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox, power is sent to all four wheels through the car’s innately intelligent all-wheel drive system. The car runs and drives well, no doubt thanks to the consistent and thorough maintenance. In 2011, the car was lightly renovated by the team at Pro-Porsche, which included the removal of the windscreen to address some minor corrosion.

964s have skyrocketed in desirability, and for good reason; they embody everything great about 911s. Usability and practicality combined with an engaging driving experience. This Carrera 4, with its combination of top-down motoring for summer and all-wheel drive for winter, makes it the ideal choice for those seeking some classic Porsche in their everyday life.
