In 1986, Porsche founded its first brand championship with the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup with the aim of offering a cost-effective racing series for popular sports in addition to professional motorsport. Young drivers should be able to gain experience alongside professional pilots under the same technical requirements. The Cup racing cars introduced in 1986 were based on the 944 Tubo. The body corresponded to the production vehicle. However, the rear seats were removed and sports bucket seats were installed instead of the standard ones. To protect the driver, an aluminum roll cage was installed.
Only minor changes were made to the chassis. The rubber mounts of the wheel suspension were harder and the spring and damper settings were also tighter compared to the series. The Cup cars also had stronger stabilizers installed.
