The vehicle in detail

Chassis No. WP0AA0955GN156404

Introduced in 1982, the genesis of the Porsche 944 can be traced back to the mid-1970s when Porsche introduced the 924 model. Engineers chose a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout with a 2+2 seating configuration, creating a practical sports car for everyday use and the first of the so-called “transaxle” cars. The front engine, V8-powered 928 was the next to follow, and based on these sales successes and a little styling help from the 924 GTP racecar from 1980, the 944 was born. The 944 also featured a sleek, aerodynamic design that incorporated box fender flares and pop-up headlights, both distinctive features of the era. In 1986 Porsche introduced a turbocharged 944 variant, naturally called the 944 Turbo. Of course, Porsche being Porsche, at the same time they introduced a one-make “Turbo Cup” racing series to further tie the street car to its racing stablemates. The street version featured a potent 2.5-liter inline-four engine with a turbocharger and intercooler, generating 220 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque. It featured a new exhaust system, revised bodywork, Brembo four-piston brakes, and a stiffer suspension. Renowned for its balanced handling and performance, it accelerated from zero to 60 mph in about 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 162 mph. This model garnered acclaim for its exceptional agility and precise steering, securing a loyal following among driving enthusiasts globally.

This 944 Turbo, specified in understated non-metallic Black with a Black partial leather interior, was originally sold to Y.B.H. Sales & Service of Edgemont, Pennsylvania, for a total of $33,597 when new. Its original window sticker notes that the Porsche was additionally optioned with the desirable Touring Package (including a rear window wiper, cruise control, alarm system, and an electric sunroof), a Monterey digital cassette stereo, and Fuchs 16-inch forged alloy wheels with black centers. The accompanying CARFAX Vehicle History Report begins with an initial entry in October 1990, showing that the 944 Turbo was registered in Illinois showing just over 7,000 miles. Subsequent registration and service entries indicate that the car was located in South Carolina by the mid 2000s, where it was driven regularly and routinely serviced by Peacock Automotive until 2019.

Now presented with 37,242 miles at the time of cataloging, this attractive black-on-black 944 Turbo is a compelling example of Porsche’s well-balanced and beloved 1980s sports car. It is offered with its Porsche-issued CoA, window sticker, books, tools, compressor, factory storage bag for the sunroof, factory Blaupunkt Monterey SQR 23 AM/FM/cassette head unit, and a clean CARFAX Vehicle History Report.
