Model history
The Porsche 944 was introduced in 1982 as a direct successor to the successful Porsche 924. This step was taken in light of some criticisms of the 924, particularly its four-cylinder engine and transaxle design, which were criticized by some purists. To address these concerns and at the same time build on the success of the 924, Porsche decided to develop a new four-cylinder engine based on the proven V8 engine of the Porsche 928. This innovation led to a significant increase in performance and a noticeable improvement in smooth running compared to the previous model.
