The Porsche 928 was a great success, wrote the automotive press! The public and experts were thrilled at its debut in 1977, and the 928 also won the title “Car of the Year 1978”. But it had a problem: it wasn't a 911.
But there are others to blame for this, for example those at Porsche who seriously thought that the front-engined eight-cylinder bullet could replace the air-cooled 911 in the medium term, primarily the then CEO Ernst Fuhrmann.
By today's standards, the eight-cylinder Porsche is almost a delicate lightweight. The aluminum eight-cylinder doesn't care; thanks to the 320 hp of the S4 evolution, it has no trouble with the 1.6-ton 2+2-seater. Acceleration and top speed are still impressive, as is the ease with which this flat, wide car rushes along.
