As the 1990s began, Porsche kept their front-engined, rear-wheel-drive 928 model relevant with a final, special rendition: the GTS. Featuring the largest and most powerful V-8 engine ever fitted to a roadgoing Porsche, the model’s 350-horsepower, 5.4-liter powerplant was supplemented by an upgraded five-speed transaxle providing crisp shifts, and improved, multi-piston brakes to supply ample stopping power. The 928 GTS also received subtle styling updates which included a new spoiler, side mirrors, and exclusive 17-inch light alloy wheels, which underscore the model’s true sporting prowess.
Just over 2,900 were built between 1992 and 1995, and pristine examples of this supremely well-balanced grand tourer are quite sought-after today.
Offered here is a particularly fantastic, low-mileage specimen—one of only 54 examples equipped with the five-speed manual transaxle for the US market during the model’s initial year of availability. Finished in Black (A1) over a Classic Grey draped leather (MX) interior, this GTS was delivered new to Hendrick Porsche in Charlotte, North Carolina, and subsequently purchased by a local enthusiast. As a “warm weather” order, it was desirably specified with Porsche’s upgraded dual-zone climate control system and an electric power sunroof. The car’s accompanying window sticker shows additional factory-fitted features including a CR-2 radio with remote six-disc CD system, heated electric sport seats, sport shocks absorbers, side protection moldings, and 17-inch Cup wheels with colored Porsche crest center caps.
In February 2020, this wonderful 928 GTs was acquired by an enthusiast in Ohio, then showing approximately 18,300 miles and with only two recorded previous owners since new.
Service records on file show that within the past 1,100 miles of careful enjoyment, the car has benefitted from servicing by Porsche-authorized dealerships, including a timing belt service, new clutch and associated assembly parts, set of Continental ExtremeContact tires, brake system freshening (including rotors, pads, hoses, and fluid), four-wheel alignment, TPMS system, electronic sensor sorting, and road testing to assure all onboard diagnostics are in proper working order. Importantly, this 928 GTS retains its numbers-matching engine and transaxle, as confirmed by an accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and VINAnalytics build report. Additionally, it is offered with its original owner’s manual and VIN-matched delivery materials in folio, as well as manufacturer sales literature.
Having traveled fewer than 19,400 miles since new, this striking example of Porsche’s final, and most powerful, 928 is truly a front-engine prize for the discerning marque enthusiast wishing to experience some five-speed, V-8 fun for themselves. An enthusiast favorite for years that is steadily gaining appreciation from collectors, low-mileage 928s of any variety are difficult to find, and this special GTS example should not be overlooked.
