The vehicle in detail

Launched at the 1977 Geneva Auto Salon, the Porsche 928 was a luxury GT car intended to replace the company’s evergreen 911. Penned by Wolfgang Möbius, the 928 represented a new direction for the marque with its front-mounted V8 engine and futuristic design owing virtually nothing to any prior model.

The 928’s unibody was predominantly rust-resistant galvanized steel, however the doors, front fenders, and hood were crafted from aluminum for weight savings. Aiding the car visually while reducing aerodynamic drag, the 928 featured pop-up headlamps, and integrated bumpers made from impact-resistant polyurethane plastic. Strikingly modern, the interior featured a slanted center console, an adjustable instrument cluster, and practical 2+2 accommodation with the ability to fold down the rear seats to enlarge the cargo area accessible via the large hatchback.

Crowned European Car of the Year in 1978, the 928 was updated throughout its 1977-1995 production as per Porsche custom. For 1992, a GTS model offered an enlarged 5.4-liter DOHC V8 producing 345-horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 369 lb-ft of torque at 4,250 rpm. Other highlights included broadened rear wheel arches, larger front brakes, 17 inch Cup I wheels, a color-matched rear wing, dual exhaust outlets, and a reflective red panel between the taillights. Porsche claimed 0-60 mph in 5.3 seconds, 0-100 mph in 13.1 seconds, and a 170 mph top speed.

Delivered new to Spain, this 928 GTS later joined a collection focusing on 1980s and 1990s sports cars. This collection was later dispersed with this car sold into current ownership in February 2019. Indicating 17,059 kilometers (10,588 miles) at the time of cataloging, this GTS presents in commensurately well-preserved condition throughout. Once imported to the US in 2020, this special GTS visited Barnaba Autosport in Batavia, Illinois. White there it received a replacement battery, oil change with filter and the replacement of both valve cover gaskets.

Underappreciated when introduced despite initial acclaim, the sale of this final evolution 928, manual transmission GTS offers the almost unrepeatable opportunity to purchase a practically showroom-new example.
