Excellent Drivability and Performance – Summer 2020 Inspection and Scheduled Service
Porsche took a step in a radically different direction for the company with the introduction of the 928. It offered a more luxurious grand touring option to their sports car lineup, and suitable alternative should emissions and rear-engine regulations tighten even further. The model was sold side-by-side with 911 until 1995, offering a unique alternative for the driver looking for an arguably more sophisticated and refined Porsche.
9288200241 was sold new to John Duncan of Williamsville, New York, who would retain ownership until early 1993, when it changed hands for the first time, while residing in the greater Buffalo, NY area nearly its entire life under limited ownership. In addition to limited use, regular upkeep and garage storage, the 928 would remain in an exceptionally preserved state of condition for its next step in life.
According its most recent caretaker, he always admired the 928 and had been seeking out just the right and ideally optioned example for a refreshening. This particular first-year car, in striking Silver Metallic paintwork over Black pinstripe upholstery was desirably equipped with the seldom seen factory 5-speed transmission, no sunroof, nor side rub stripes – which together, is often regarded as the purest of 928 design.
After the purchase in 2015, a complete and meticulous restoration was commissioned for this exceptionally honest example to near factory new condition. An additional binder of detailed work summaries, photos and records accompany the sale which trace the 3-year restoration efforts by model experts. The entire vehicle was stripped and disassembled for new paint and upholstery in correct hue and pattern, along with R&R to all mechanical systems, auxiliaries, components, and electronics. All paint and platings were also refinished. Completion and final assembly was entrusted to recognized experts in the 928 community – Robert Edwards and William Anast. 1978 928s had several unique features and running changes during early production, Rob and William committed over 1,200 hours to assure these details were ultimately correct as documented in 2,500 process photos. Additionally, they offer follow-up support to the winning bidder. A herculean effort overall, rarely ever seen on a 928 to this scale, along with special consideration made to retain as many original and OEM parts of the vehicle as possible.
In stock configuration, “phone dial” alloy wheels are fitted with new period correct 225/50VR16 Pirelli Cinturato P7 tires, complementing bright glossy paint work. Its cabin is equally as impressive and pampered, while the engine bay and undercarriage are in like-new factory form with correct decals, padding, plating, and finishes throughout the vehicle. Shortly after completion, the 928 proved its aptitude on the concours lawn of the 2019 PCA Werks Reunion. Now displaying just 35,500 original chassis miles, this incomparable 928 is immediately ready for vintage touring and/or concours display. A Summer 2020 inspection and scheduled service ensures continued drivability, followed by a Porsche Classic Technical Inspection performed by Texas’ only Porsche Classic Partner.
Importantly, the 928 is complete with its original books in folio, toolkit, jack, spare, and emergency equipment. As the foremost influencer of all modern front-engine and water-cooled Porsche models, this early and exceptional 928 presents a rare opportunity for the discerning collector or enthusiast to acquire a collector grade example, on a level beyond others in today’s marketplace. Available now for worldwide purchase and delivery from our Houston, Texas showroom.
