The basis of this sports car was the 924 Turbo with the 2-liter four-cylinder engine. To increase engine power, the engine was given lighter forged pistons, hardened camshafts and a revised cylinder head with a compression ratio increased from 7.5:1 to 8.5:1. The maximum boost pressure of the KKK turbocharger was raised to 0.75 bar and an additional intercooler was installed. The engine was controlled via a so-called Hartig ignition, which increased power and also kept fuel consumption relatively low at around 9.1 l per 100 km. In this version, the engine produced 154 kW (210 hp) at 6000 rpm . The top speed was 240 km/h and the vehicle needed 6.9 seconds to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h.
To match the engine power, a revised gearbox was installed, which could be supplemented with a limited-slip differential on request. To save weight, Porsche developers turned to motorsport and gave the car a new, lightweight exhaust system.
The Carrera GT had forged 7J×15 Fuchs rims and 215/60 VR-15 wide tires at the front and rear as standard. For an additional charge, larger wheels with rim dimensions of 7J × 16 at the front with 205/55 VR-16 tires and 8J × 16 at the rear with 225/50 VR-16 tires could be ordered instead. The braking system with internally ventilated disc brakes was taken from the Porsche 911 Turbo 3.3.
The body of the car had widened fenders made of glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP) at the front and rear. While the front fenders were harmoniously integrated into the lines and already had the shape of the 944, the rear fenders were attached. The front apron, the side skirts and the air scoop on the hood were also made of GRP in order to keep the vehicle weight to a minimum of 1180 kg. The windshield was glued flush with the body in order to maintain the drag coefficient of 0.34 despite the fender flares.
The interior was largely the same as that of the 924 Turbo and included a three-spoke leather steering wheel, a leather gear knob and sports seats and door panels covered in black and red pinstripe fabric. Many extras were available as special equipment, such as an alarm system, a car radio, electric windows, electric outside mirror adjustment, air conditioning, etc. The base price for the sports car was around 60,000 DM.
The Porsche 924 Carrera GT was only built in 1981 in an edition of 400 examples , of which 200 were sold in Germany . As the vehicle did not meet the strict emissions regulations in the USA, it was not allowed to be sold there. Including the six prototypes, this gives a total of 406 Carrera GTs built.
