Model history

In 1969, Volkswagen and Porsche presented the jointly developed VW-Porsche 914 at the IAA in Frankfurt – a mid-engine sports car that was produced from 1969 to 1976. With its design, which until then had been reserved mainly for racing cars and exotic cars such as the Lamborghini Miura, the 914 made a sporty statement. The open two-seater with a Targa roof was optionally equipped with a four-cylinder boxer engine (flat-4) or a six-cylinder boxer engine (flat-6). For VW, the model brought fresh momentum to the range, while Porsche found a successor to the 356, which was positioned below the 911 – both benefited from the strategic collaboration and the innovative design.
