The vehicle in detail

Chassis No. 12800760
Engine No. 1280613
Transmission No. 1080288

This 1968 Porsche 912 was finished on 25 September 1967 destined to land a world away from Germany in Tucson, Arizona. It was specially ordered by Harold Metcalf via Scott Van Wyk VW–Porsche with bumper guards with rubber trim, tinted glass all-around, an antenna, loudspeaker, chrome wheels, and hub caps with colored Porsche crests. Perhaps most important was its Paint to Sample Champangergelb (Champagne Yellow) exterior color. Offered between 1962 and 1965 the color was a firm favorite among 356 owners. It would stand to reason that Metcalf was a former 356 owner who felt at home in a Champagne Yellow Porsche propelled by a 1,600-cc four cylinder! It was surely an inspired specification nearly totaling the price of a base 911!

According to its original stamped service book, Metcalf had driven the 912 an impressive 11,712 miles by November 1969. Arizona registration cards confirm that the car was under original ownership in the southwest’s dry climate until at least 1981. Records and mileage logbooks show an indicated 21,375 miles by February 1985 with later entries restarting in 1994 recording 33,916 miles at that time. California registrations pick up the story in 2001, when the car was owned by an individual in Tarzana. The fastidious record keeping remained between changes of ownership with the mileage book recording 39,906 miles by February 2022.

Recent service records dating to 2017 show engine mechanical work with a rebuild of the flat-four’s Weber carburetors, a repair to the mechanical fuel pump, a fuel tank cleaning with fresh fuel and filter, new spark plugs, and a tune. In 2018, the 912 was stripped to bare metal with glass removed and refinished with Glasurit paint in its original shade of Champagne Yellow. An electric fuel pump was installed in 2021 along with a new engine insulation pad, and a four-wheel alignment and ride height adjustment. Most recently, in 2023, the car received an undercarriage detail with fresh undercoating. Perhaps most impressive are the records and original delivery items kept that include a tool kit and jack, manuals including service book, Hirschmann antenna and Blaupunkt information, and all-important registration and logbooks recording the car’s impressive provenance
