Porsche 912

Porsche 912

Coupé, 1968

Highlights

  • Hotrod build!
  • SWB body
  • 2.7l engine

Overall this riotous little 912 hotrod is a real hoot to drive, with a raucous soundtrack that goads you into holding every gear to the redline. It is absolutely a car built for the driver rather than collector, it does has it’s imperfections and there is still a little work to be done in places to make it perfect – but as it stands it is ready to be enjoyed now with great handling to back up its bark.

The vehicle in detail

1968 Porsche 912 fitted with a 2.7 6 cylinder engine. Finished in grey with black interior. Showing just 255km since being built by a known 911 customiser in Stockholm. Chassis number 12804627.

As you can see from the photos this car has moved far from its humble beginnings as a 912. Being an early car it benefits from the increasingly desirable short wheelbase body, revered for its narrow form and livelier handling closer to the purity of the original 901 than the later long wheelbase cars. In 911 guise these swb cars are selling for over €150,000 putting them out of reach of most buyers and making the 912 an increasingly attractive proposition, both with its original 4 cylinder engine or converted with a flat six as is the case with this car.

A 2.7 engine has been dropped in, with MSD ignition added and the MFI system replaced with set of renovated Weber carbs creating a wonderful sound and brining things back in line with the mechanical simplicity of the earlier cars. The 2.7 unit has been sprayed grey to match the car. Adding to the soundtrack is a set of stainless steel headers and the popular Dansk RS style dual outlet exhaust. The gearbox is now a 915 and shifts well, and all the electronics have been overhauled.

The car has had a total exterior respray and is very striking in the flesh. It has the original fenders, bumpers and also benefits from aluminium door frames. The front bumper is a lightweight fibreglass item, and above it sits new headlights which have been tinted yellow. Please note the Roughneck decals and Nezumi badge on the glovebox are personal to the owner and will be removed before sale.

Inside, the driver and passenger are seated on Cobra RS seats, with steering controlled through a requisite Momo Prototipo which suits this build perfectly. New RS style carpets have been added as well as 1967 R style doorcards, and a new headliner, renovated gauges and a custom wood dash really finish off the inside.

Chassis modifications include 15” Fuchs style wheels that have been freshly finished in black and also benefit from a new set of Toyo tyres. Behind these sit a set of Carrera brakes ensuring ample stopping power in such a lightweight build, and body roll is kept in check by Tarrett Engineering sway bars front and rear. The car also benefits from being corner weighted and balanced.

This 912 presents well and is incredibly fun to drive but was built to a budget for a friend to this customiser and there are areas it could benefit from a little additional work to make it perfect. It has also (like a lot of cars of this age) suffered some crash damage, in this instance to the front right side, as can be seen in the photographs of the wheel well where there is a visible crease in the metalwork. We have tested and driven this car ourselves on several occasions but being a newly built car with very few KM there are unforeseen issues that may arise in future, as with any new car, boat and even house build – it is important for the buyer to be aware of this.
