We are excited to offer on behalf of one of our clients in Germany this outstanding 1977 early Porsche Turbo Carrera Coupe.
For many years, 2shores has been offering selected, finest grade examples of air-cooled Porsches. This unique 3.0l Turbo is one of those examples!
The Porsche 930 is the internal designation for the turbocharged variant of the 911 model manufactured by German automobile manufacturer Porsche between 1975 and 1989. It was the maker’s top-of-the-range 911 model for its entire production duration and, at the time of its introduction, was the fastest production car available in Germany.
Porsche badged the vehicle simply as “Turbo” (although early U.S. units were badged as “Turbo Carrera”) and introduced the vehicle at the Paris Auto Show in October 1974 before putting it on sale in the spring of 1975; export to the United States began in 1976.
The 930 proved very fast but also very demanding to drive, and due to its short wheelbase and rear engine layout, was prone to oversteer and turbo-lag. It acquired the nickname “the Widowmaker” after several crashes and deaths attributed to its handling characteristics, which were unfamiliar to many drivers. Under certain conditions, applying too much throttle would cause the heavy rear end of the car to swing outward like a pendulum, causing the car to spin out. To this day, Porsche corporate employees who drive 911 Turbo models for testing or for business reasons are mandated to undergo “Turbo Training”, despite the fact that newer 911 Turbo models are generally safer and easier to drive.
Our vehicle: What prompted “Gary” in 1977 to trade in his 2-year-old Lincoln MK IV for ordering his 930 can not be fully explained. In any case, it is certain that he spared no expense when putting it together and configured this wonderful vehicle from Porsche according to his dreams. Color to sample in the color of his company for the right corporate identity, sports seats, limited slip differential and the electric sunroof are at the top of the order (Original order invoice still in file).
One thing is certain, Gary hasn’t driven the car much. This is proven by numerous invoices from the first few years. There were some technical problems, and the Porsche spent a lot of time at the dealership. Maybe that’s how he lost the fun with the vehicle, because the last documented odometer reading under his ownership is only around 7000 miles!
The vehicle was stored in his garage for a few years until it was reactivated in 2001 by the second owner.
At that time the original, flat and cracked tires from the factory were still mounted. Fortunately, the next owner recognized the significance of this unique, early Turbo and treated it accordingly but still did not put a lot of miles on it.
In 2008, the Turbo was re-imported into the hands of a collector in southern Germany. Here the 930 was treated to a complete technical revision including an engine rebuild with increased power output to 311hp (dyno sheet available).
The result is a real Porsche collector’s dream! An early 3.0 Turbo in a contemporary special “PTS paint to sample”color with extremely (just under 10,000 miles) low mileage, complete history and a professionally revised and upgraded engine in excellent collector’s condition.
This 930 comes with full documentation including original bill of sale, complete service documentation, books, manuals and dyno sheet.
This is a very rare opportunity for the serious Porsche collector or enthusiast!
