Porsche 911 T

Porsche 911 T

Targa, 1970

Highlights

  • Engine and gearbox rebuilt by marque specialist in 2019
  • Delivered new in Tuscany; an Italian car its whole life
  • Restored in stunning Tangerine over black-and-white houndstooth interior, its original colours

Delivered new to Tuscany in 1970, this 911 T was originally finished just as it presents today, in Tangerine paint over black leather with houndstooth seat inserts. It has remained in Italy for its entire life, spending most of its life on Italy’s north-west coast between Massa-Carrara and Lucca. Most recently, the engine and gearbox have been completely rebuilt by a Porsche specialist in Northern Italy. Importantly, it still retains its original engine and gearbox, and will be accompanied by the original steering wheel, as well as the Prototipo steering wheel currently fitted to the car.

Presented in a truly wonderful colour scheme, this Targa is sure to turn heads wherever it goes.

The vehicle in detail

In 1969 the first major overhaul of Porsche’s 911 took place. For the 1970 model year, the wheelbase was slightly increased, although the engine remained in the same location. Different model lines were offered to suit the wants and needs of different markets—the touring model, or the 911 T, is offered here.

The 911 T employed a 2.2-litre version of the standard flat-six engine. Modifications included dropping the compression ratio down to 8.5:1 and the use of cast-iron cylinder walls as opposed to the iron/aluminium ‘Biral’ sleeves. Features that separated the 911 T from its siblings were the use of non-vented disc brakes, a four-speed transmission, and the absence of front and rear anti-roll bars. The 911 T could accelerate to 60 mph in eight seconds and a top speed of 129 mph. Where performance was marginally detuned, the quality of ride and comfort was greatly increased, and for many Porsche customers this was considered a very fair trade.
The open-top 911 model was called the Targa—so named for Porsche’s successes in the celebrated Sicilian race. Previously only an option, fixed rear glass became standard in the 1970 model year. With the roof removed, the interior of this Tangerine Porsche is on full view. This model year included the addition of a flip-out ashtray in the dash panel, larger door storage pockets, and a day-night rear-view mirror mounted on the windshield. Seat panels finished in black-and-white plaid ensure that the interior looks just as cool as the exterior!
