1982 Porsche 911SC Coupe

Upon its debut, the 911SC was expected to be the final hurrah of Porsche’s long-lived rear-engined sports car. Of course, the 911 is still with us today and over the past 40 years the 3.0-liter 911SC has been lauded as one of the most reliable performance cars to come out of Stuttgart. As a result, many 911SCs are well into the sixth digit of their odometers, happily spinning as their owners pack on the miles. Some examples however — as rare as they are — were kept as low-mileage collector pieces, preserved as a representative example of their generation.

The vehicle in detail

Produced as a 1982 model year in August 1981 following the factory’s summer break, this 911SC Coupe features a scant 9,778 miles at cataloging. Given the low mileage, an original owner likely with a fastidious nature purchased the car. As expected the car retains its original window sticker, manuals, and toolkit. A closer look at the window sticker reveals some interesting options. Sold through Schneider Porsche Audi, famous for their SCCA 944 race cars of the era, it was specified with Black paint over an optional black genuine leather interior. An electric sliding sunroof, a heated windshield, and the mysterious $2,050 Option Group M41 (usually a grouping of desirable options like Fuchs wheels, fog lights, and Bilstein sport shocks, and nearly 10% of the 911SC’s base price) were also ordered among other selections.

Finally, for $1,325 “Spoilers, Front & Rear” were ordered but today the rear spoiler is not on the car. It is thought that when the car was delivered to Schneider Porsche Audi with that option, the rear wing was removed upon the request of the customer, with it being exchanged for the normal engine lid. Such dealer alterations were common in the era and as 1982 was the first year that a Turbo tail and front chin spoiler were available as an option for a normally aspirated 911 and it is highly likely that the buyer was less than enthused about the proportions of the larger wing and 911SC fender flairs.

Today, this 911SC displays many of the hallmarks of a well-kept, low-mileage example. The interior finishes exude originality. The Blaupunkt CR-3001H cassette deck remains untampered with and retains its original booklet, the VDO gauge needles glow with fluorescent red coloring, and the optional leather interior is largely devoid of wear. On the exterior, the left front fender retains its factory-applied, but often removed, “UNLEADED FUEL ONLY” decal, and clean Fuchs wheels are shod with Goodyear NCT tires, all hallmarks of a true low mileage example. This veritable feast for the senses is an example for those collectors who relish original details that sadly, often disappear with time.
