The original window sticker for this 1981 Porsche 911 SC Coupe shows that it was delivered to Cabriolet Porsche Audi of Miami, Florida. The car was originally built in March of 1981 as it appears today in classic Guards Red with a Beige interior. The original order featured a bevy of options that included genuine leather front seats, an automatic antenna, and an electric sliding sunroof. Furthermore, the window sticker shows that it was ordered with “Option Group J16” for $2,535. This mysterious option package included 16-inch forged Fuchs wheels, short shock absorbers, front fog lights, rear speakers, and a passenger door mirror.
This specification appealed to none other than Key West, Florida, resident James William Buffett, better known as Jimmy. The internationally famous singer-songwriter, author, and businessman’s name and former Key West address at 704 Wadell Ave appear on a digital copy of its original title issued on 24 May 1981. A Florida Vehicle Registration Certificate from 1982 also notes Buffett as the owner with the car receiving Florida license plate “VEH714.” After reaching out to those around Jimmy Buffett at the time, the consignor discovered that a member of Buffett’s summer 1981 Coconut Telegraph Tour drove the car from delivery in Florida to Indiana that July for the singer. A photo of Buffett in his new red 911 was signed to him “Thanks for all your help with the car. Best Wishes.” Paperwork with the car shows that Buffett retained the car for nearly 10 years, selling it in 1992 to a Margate, Florida resident. In late 1999, the car was acquired by the consignor, also based in Florida.
For the past 27 years, Buffett’s former 911 SC Coupe has been maintained in original condition, with light modifications from new including window tint, Rest of World taillight lenses, and a polished finish on its 16-inch Fuchs wheels. Most recently Zotz Racing completed a thorough rebuild of the braking system with a new master cylinder, brake lines, and fluid, an engine tune up, and fresh tires. It is offered in its original colors with 108,845 miles on its VDO odometer. The sale includes its original Porsche Audi window sticker, toolkit, air pump, records of former Jimmy Buffett ownership, service paperwork, and digital images of Buffett with the car
