This gorgeous F-Series Porsche 911 S coupe is the 17th of 1,430 produced world-wide for the 1973 model year, the last of the much sought-after “long-hood,” pre-impact bumper 911s. Ordered in Silbermetalic with a full black leather interior, this 911 S was completed on 1 August 1972 and was among the first 911 S coupes imported to the US in 1973. It is said to have been delivered new to a doctor in the Midwest who had selected a small number of factory options. These included green tinted glass all around, radio-delete, a manual antenna and noise suppressor package, and an engine compartment light.
The doctor enjoyed the car until the early 1990s, when he sold it to Florida-based racers Danny Stewart and Scott Tyler, who disassembled the coupe for restoration. Before the job was completed, the car was sold to another Porsche enthusiast, Keith Innis, who also decided that he lacked the time to finish the work. It wound up with Phil Bagley at Porsche restoration specialist Klubsport Racing near Palm Beach, Florida, where the engine—the numbers-matching unit, according to research on file—and transaxle were overhauled, along with the suspension, brakes, and shocks. The engine was upgraded with Carrera chain tensioners. All the hardware was replaced, replated, or powder-coated. The lower pan was inspected and re-undercoated, and the Fuchs alloy wheels were refinished.
After the restoration was completed, this 911 S was sold before coming into the collection of the current owner in 2016. This owner, a noted collector, noted that the paint on one door did not meet his standards, so, he decided to have the car stripped for a full glass-out, bare-metal respray in January 2017 by award-winning painter Scott Bonowski of Hot Rod and Hobbies in Signal Hill, California. While the car was disassembled, all the chrome trim was replated. Porsche marque specialist Klaus Holthaus of North American Racing Werks in Reseda, California adjusted the mechanical fuel injection and carried out additional maintenance.
This 911 S coupe presents beautifully, with wonderful paint (the nose is protected with Clear Bra) and Bluetooth-equipped interior, and a well-detailed engine bay and front trunk with its correct spare, jack, and tool roll. It would be a fine addition to any serious collection of air-cooled 911s.
