It’s engine was essentially a naturally aspirated version of the flagship 930 Turbo unit, with a few notable exceptions, including:Larger inlet ports
Increased compression ratio (6.5:1 to 8.5:1)
Die-cast aluminium crankcase (inherited from the Carrera 2.7RS)
Nikasil cylinder liners
5-blade cooling fan
Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection
Producing just shy of 200bhp and 255Nm of torque, the Carrera 3.0 was certainly no slouch. A 0-60mph time of 6.3s, top speed of 145mph, and a kerb weight of just over 1,000kg, meant that the Carrera 3.0 is considered by many to offer one of the best driving experiences of any air-cooled 911.
In total, only 3,687 Carrera 3.0s were ever built. Of these, 2,564 were Coupes and 1,123 were Targas.
THIS CAR
The car we have for sale here is not only one of the rare Targa versions of the Carrera 3.0, it’s an original RHD example, making it even rarer still.
Delivered new to Hong Kong in June 1977, Chassis 0326 would remain in the country for the first 16 years of its life.
During this time it clocked up over 42,000 miles, passing through the hands of 4 owners, including two Boeing 747 Captains at Cathay Pacific Airlines and a successful club-level Porsche privateer, Adrian Yates-Smith, who was notable for his 3rd place overall finish at the 1981 Nurburgring 1000km behind the wheel of a Porsche 935 K3:
Before importing the car into the UK in 1994, the car’s fourth owner, Doug Gage of Cathay Specific Airlines, commissioned a full respray (changing the colour from Platinum Diamond to Guards Red), an engine rebuild, and a host of other items at the Jebson Porsche Centre in Hong Kong.
The car then remained with Mr Gage at his Henley residence until it was acquired by the current owner in 2007.
Since then, the car has received regular servicing and maintenance (with tons of invoices in the history file), clocking up an additional 40,000 miles in the last 15 or so years.
Now showing just over 85,000 miles from new, the car presents really rather well.
We have treated the car to a 2-stage paint correction and full interior deep clean, and while we couldn’t describe it as being in ‘show level’ condition, it really does stand out.
IMPORTANT
After performing a full inspection of the car, there are a few items we have identified as requiring attention:Rough idle when cold
Hesitancy under load at low rpm
Suspension bushes worn
The full mechanical report can be made available upon enquiry.
We should stress, however, that the car is still perfectly useable as it is now. It starts every single time and its a joy to drive.
The above items have been considered and are reflected in the asking price.
