The 911 Speedster represents Porsche's success in the 1950s. In bad times, people like to remember the good times. This was also the case at the end of the 1980s, when sales in the important US market were severely weak.
This Speedster study was therefore presented at the 1987 IAA, 70 kg lighter and reduced to the essentials. Many tried in vain to order a Speedster directly, but the first vehicles were not delivered until July 1989. Most of them were exported, mostly to the USA. Porsche only distributed 465 units to domestic customers. The special roof of the Speedster, which was mostly sewn by hand, proved to be a production bottleneck. The basic body of the production model was the wide variant of the Turbo Cabriolet. A special detail was the windshield, which was 80 mm lower and 5 degrees flatter and could be removed using on-board tools.
Fabric tops make almost any convertible look good, but the result on the Porsche 911 Speedster is stunning – the thick, shapely rear, the fabric top that sits significantly lower than the normal convertible, a feast for the eyes, especially from the rear. It's a real convertible cinema, accompanied by the unadulterated sawing sound of the old Carrera six-cylinder. It is of course still air-cooled, and its exhaust gases leave the thick tailpipe without having been through a recording studio.
The Carrera 3.2 is rightly considered, provided it is properly cared for and maintained, to be the most solid and durable of the classic air-cooled 911s, the crowning glory of the original 901 design from 1964. The mechanics and engine of the C1 , built from 1984 to 1989, are long-lasting, and the sheet metal is fully galvanized.
So it's hardly surprising that the Speedster is one of the most sought-after classic Porsche models today. The low number of units, the longevity and the 100% Porsche DNA make the Speedster a vehicle with future value potential.
