Among the most recognisable versions of the Porsche 911 and the last to be produced on the long-running G-series chassis, the 1989-only 911 Speedster descended from the venerable 356 Speedster. Based on the 911 Cabriolet, the 911 Speedster eschewed its complex folding soft-top and rear seats in favor of a body-coloured, double-hump tonneau cover behind the front seats and a cut-down windscreen with a more aggressive rake—both design cues were inspired by the 1950s original.
As on the standard 911, Porsche’s 3.2-litre air-cooled flat six-cylinder engine drove the rear wheels through a G50 five-speed manual transaxle. The 911 Speedster could be ordered with the base “slim” bodywork or wider “turbo-look” bodywork borrowed from the type-930 911 Turbo. The latter was more popular by a large margin, with a total of 1,943 versions of the turbo-look 911 Speedster produced. Meanwhile, only 161 examples, like the example offered here, were produced with the slimmer bodywork.
Not only exceedingly rare but also well-preserved, this 911 Speedster shows only 6,992 kilometres on its odometer at the time of cataloguing. It completed production on 8 June 1989 and wears its factory colour scheme of Satin Black Metallic over red leather. The manually adjustable leather seats feature black piping while the instrument housing is finished in red leather, a Porsche Exclusive factory option. Other specifications it was built with include an alarm and velour carpet lining the luggage compartment. The car rides on period-correct Fuchs wheels.
Acquired by the consignor in 2005, this exemplary 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster has been part of a well-kept collection and driven only rarely under current ownership. It is accompanied by factory manuals, a tool roll, and copies of various documentation.
Extremely rare and in remarkably well-preserved condition, this slim-body Speedster is sure to remain one of the most coveted air-cooled Porsches of all time.
