We are delighted to present this rare and fascinating 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.8 RSR.

One of only 55 examples built, this RSR was specifically developed for GT endurance racing. Based on the Carrera RS 2.7, it received the M491 package, which made it a true success thanks to a weight saving of 80 kg, a wider body, and improved aerodynamics. Thanks to the increased displacement, the engine produced 300 hp, while the Porsche 917-based braking system and optimized chassis ensured outstanding handling.

The vehicle in detail

The car made its first racing appearance in 1973 at the 12 Hours of Sebring, where it finished fourth overall under Grey Egerton and with support from Far West Racing and sponsors such as Pharr Yarns, Castrol and Cibie. That same year it achieved further success at the Six Hours of Watkins Glen with third place in the GT class. After further outings, the RSR was sold to Porsche specialist Jim Cook in 1974, who campaigned it in the IMSA GT Championship. Like many 2.8 RSRs, it was modified to a 3.0-liter displacement.

After its active racing career ended, the car changed hands several times in the USA, was restored and finally returned to its original 2.8-liter specification. It returned to Europe in 2013 and has since been presented mainly at exclusive events, including the prestigious Salon Privé Concours d'Elegance 2015 at Blenheim Palace.

At the end of 2015, marque expert Andrew Prill of Prill Porsche Classics inspected the vehicle. A detailed written report of his findings is documented in the vehicle file. The vehicle's originality was confirmed. It was also found that this RSR conforms to the correct RSR specification and is equipped with both the original engine and transmission. Numerous other original RSR features were also identified, including the oil tank and oil system, the transmission oil cooler, the brake calipers, the pedal box, the 110-liter fuel tank, and the roll cage.

Today, this RSR presents itself in its historic livery with starting number 81, exactly as it did in 1973. Rarely driven, it is in exceptionally good condition and is a true collector's item with a unique history.

History of the series

In October 1972, Porsche presented the 911 Carrera 2.7 RS at the Paris Motor Show. This was a high-performance variant of the 911 and was primarily developed for homologation in motorsport. The 2.4 S, the most powerful 911 up to that point, was no longer competitive with the larger-displacement touring cars of the competition. In order to compete in Group 4, the regulations required a minimum production run of 500 units. Porsche therefore offered the Carrera RS at only a slightly higher price than the previous top model, the 911 S 2.4. But demand exceeded all expectations: the planned number was quickly sold out, so production was increased to 1,000 vehicles, which meant the car could also be homologated for Group 3.

The name "Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS" combined several important elements. The suffix "Carrera" had stood for particularly sporty models since the Porsche 356, while "RS" stood for "racing" and "2.7" for the engine's displacement in liters. The Carrera RS was not only the most powerful model of its time, but also the fastest German production car. Particularly striking was its distinctive rear spoiler, the so-called "ducktail," which increased the top speed by 10 km/h in tests and provided greater driving stability.

Porsche offered the 911 Carrera 2.7 RS in two versions. The sports version (RS / M471) was designed for lightweight construction and weighed less than 1,000 kg thanks to a thin-sheet body, plastic bumpers, and Porsche emblems as stickers. Despite the consistent weight reduction, the model remained suitable for everyday use. According to the literature, the price was 34,000 DM, and between 200 and 217 examples were built. An alternative option was the Touring version (RSL / M472), which, with its more extensive equipment, approached the comfort of the 911 S. It had standard seats, a rear bench seat, rear vent windows, and conventional door handles, which increased the weight to just under 1,100 kg. In return, it offered better everyday usability. Its price was 36,500 DM, and production numbers ranged from 1,280 to 1,308 examples.

Those seeking the ultimate racing car could purchase the 911 Carrera 2.8 RSR (M491). For an additional charge of around 25,000 DM, one received a vehicle built according to Group 4 regulations. With a 2.8-liter engine and 300 hp, it successfully competed against larger and more powerful rivals such as the Ford Capri and BMW Coupé touring cars. Only 55 examples of this uncompromising racing car were built. With the 911 Carrera 2.7 RS, Porsche set standards and created a legend that remains one of the brand's most coveted models to this day.
