n 1989, Porsche introduced the first major change to the 911 with the launch of the 964. Although still looking like a 911 it was claimed by Porsche to feature 87% all new components over the outgoing 3.2 Carrera. The 911 was traditionally a 2wd car but the new 964 initially featured a new 4wd driveline and a powerful 3.6 twin plug engine.

New coil sprung suspension, ABS and power steering offered a significantly modern driving experience over the outgoing Carrera whilst performance was brisk too with 0-60mph coming up in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 162mph, figures that are still respectable today. A 2wd variant would follow later and the 964 series ran until 1993 when the replacement 993 was launched.

Fast forward nearly 30 years and the 964 looks like a classic 911, being the last to feature the upright headlamps, but with its modern underpinnings it offers a refined driving experience.

Porsche launched the 964 on the cusp of the recession making them difficult to sell when new, today this has made the 964 one of the rarer 911 variants.

Although the 4WD version was a revelation when launched and a great daily driver, it is the Carrera 2WD manual that is the preferred choice of the enthusiast today, seeking that pure 911 driving experience.

This example was UK supplied new by Lancaster Bow on the 28.04.1993 in the rare special order colour of speed yellow with black leather interior. Optional original features include electric sports seats/ mirrors and sunroof, 17” cup alloys and air conditioning.

This Carrera 2 manual was purchased by its current keeper in 2014 with the intention of creating his own personal restomod. He embarked on a comprehensive engine, suspension and brake rebuild totaling nearly £50,000.00 with brakes and suspension upgrades entrusted to Jasmine motorsport and a full engine rebuild and upgrade by respected engine builder Redtek.

This included RS front and rear top mounts, anti roll bars, powerflex bushes, Bilstein cup shock absorbers, 993 Turbo calipers, cross drilled discs, stainless steel braided hoses all round, refurbishment of genuine cup alloys and fitted with 15mm spacers before receiving a full geometry set up.

The engine rebuild and upgrade included a capacity upgrade to 3.8 litres with, a genuine 3.8 mahle barrel and piston conversion, RSR camshafts, 993 RSR valves, blueprinted top and bottom end, steel conrods, jenvey throttle bodies with GT3 induction system, lightweight flywheel and clutch and a bespoke exhaust system. It now produces circa 340BHP and 335 nm of torque.

A change of personal plans means this car has unexpectedly become available and still presents as a standard 964 throughout, but now comprehensively rebuilt with some fantastic upgrades.

On the road the car looks sensational in its genuine RS colour with handling and performance to match and it is fair to say, could not be created for the asking price today.

With just 1800 miles since the comprehensive rebuild/ upgrade and less than 80,000 miles in total, this 964 is ready for its next lucky custodian to enjoy as is or continue their own personal journey.
