The original targa 911s were either loved for their compromise between open-top motoring and tin-top rigidity or loathed for the fact that they compromised the iconic lines of the 911 coupe. Porsche rode the criticism for over 25 years before they created the 993 targa, a car that at once overcame concerns with the earlier cars and became another Porsche icon. The 993 targa’s glass roof replaced the folding hardtop of the 964 and earlier cars and instead of a somewhat awkward system of unbolting the roof, folding it and storing it in the luggage compartment the new roof slid back behind the rear window electrically at the touch of a button. This ensured the lines of the car were unspoiled and luggage space uncompromised. To save the cabin from heating up, an electric blind slides back to screen the cabin from the sun. Genuinely the best of both worlds. Only around 3000 were built outside the US, therefore also making it a rare sight.
