This 1978 RSR evocation started with a rust-free ’78, non-sunroof, shell from a Carrera, and was brought back to bare metal. To make this car period-specific, handmade 2.8 RSR steel was used for the rear arches and fiberglass bumpers and front arches. The chassis was also epoxy bonded and painted factory black.
The engine is naturally aspirated 3.0-litre with aluminum crankcases and was completely stripped, rebuilt, balanced and blueprinted, with new pistons, rods, valves, cams, twin spark ignition, and electronic fuel injection. The engine is dressed in fiberglass ‘tinware’ and sits within a stainless-steel engine carrier using Wevo engine mounts to eliminate flex and withstand high outputs. Engine power has been measured at 282bhp and the car weighs 950kilos equating to an impressive 300bhp/ton or (300bhp/2200lbs) The transmission is a rebuilt 915/61 aluminum cased 5-speed gearbox, paired with a Wevo short shifter with adjustable linkage and close ratio gears. For extra durability, an uprated bearing plate and Wevo one-piece retainer have been installed as well as a Sachs HD clutch kit with aluminum pressure plate.
The exterior of the car is fiberglass, other than the hood which is carbon fiber, including the RSR front wings, bumpers, and ducktail. The brakes are 917 derived from 930 calipers with fresh large rotors and pads. Custom Bilstein’s which have been re-valved, and race spring with turbo tie rods. Rennline mono-balls front and rear strut brace have been installed. The Interior of the car consists of Recaro “pole position” seats, RS door cards, a Momo steering wheel, fire extinguisher, and a battery cut-off switch. New electric wiring has also been done throughout the cabin, engine, and front. The car rides on Lindsey 17” Fuchs style P2 wheels, 8” front 9” rear.
The car is being sold by Hedon Motors out of North Carolina.
