The 500 hp and 315 km/h Upper Cayman celebrates the role of the driver's car to perfection. Porsche sets the standards and we celebrate a driving machine that will probably no longer find a successor. Certainly not a conqueror.
The titanium exhaust with volume and thin walls trumpets, high speeds of up to over 9000 rpm whir, less insulation in the sheet metal allows development, intake slurping from a turbo-free system roars and howls directly at the passengers' ears – the heavenly-hellish sound is a loud, glaring, a work of art that lures people into dependency.
Into the curve without compromise
Where rubber bushings otherwise guide the chassis control arms, the GT4 RS has relentless ball joints that lock the chassis to the body. Where in all other cars the last gear stages are set to overdrive, the Porsche makes us dizzy up to top speed with short gear pairings.
Instead of through grilles in the apron, the Cayman draws its combustion air through openings behind the B-pillar and does not have side windows. Elaborate lightweight construction, drive and chassis from motorsport, variable diffuser and wings as well as extremely heat- and bite-resistant brakes.
Suitable even for every day: In fact, depending on the program button, the shock absorbers even work in a soft mode, and passengers can even listen to music if they wish.
The front discs, which are up to 402 millimeters in size, have pads that are guided by one-piece saddles and pressed on by six pistons each. Hoses covered in steel mesh carry the hydraulic pressure to the pliers.
The driver feels this as a highly precise pressure point that never moves and certainly does not give up any of its strength. So the GT4 RS anchors on the one hand wonderfully brutal, on the other hand unexpectedly definable.
The discs made of ceramic and carbon fiber can withstand acute frictional heat very well, and the GT4 RS also directs additional cooling air to the system via the Naca nozzles in the front hood. If anything can tame the RS's beastly 500 hp, it's these miracle brakes.
Sport at heart
Enormously high speeds like in motorsport, turbo-free breathing, tuned for explosive response via individual throttle valves, an oil-thirsty dry sump lubrication, as well as rigid rocker arms – a masterpiece (fire)works sparks here.
To do this, the machine was turned 180 degrees behind the seats with great effort – it was originally installed the other way around in the 911 GT3. Thrust starts at around 6000 revs, at 8500 revs you can slowly think about changing gears, at just over 9000 the four-litre engine monster complains and hits the limiter.
You can't control a car better, more beautifully or more precisely: mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, adapted tires, adjustable shock absorbers, aerodynamics designed for extra downforce – this adds up to a kind of Pattex effect. With incredibly unwavering lateral guidance, the Porsche leans on imaginary guard rails in radii.
The rigidity of the car, the exact reactions and the outstanding precision lead to the most engaging and sensual high-speed driving experience these days.
It's exactly the right size. Estimable, finely compassable, even subjectively classified as sufficiently below the massive 911 and yet mature enough to leave playful compacts far behind.
This example is in delivery condition and corresponds to a new car. The color “Carrara white metallic”, which is currently only available as PTS, was chosen for this particularly extensively equipped vehicle. In addition to the Weissach, Clubsport and Chrono package, the car was also equipped with, among other things, the lift system, cruise control, a BOSE sound system, LED lights and the large 90 liter fuel tank. Visually, the brake calipers were painted in high-gloss black.
The inner values of this example are reflected in the interior, the optional extras selected are extensive and make the car a particularly exclusive sports vehicle: The interior of the Weissach package includes the extended leather and Race-Tex features in black-arctic gray. In addition, the interior package was supplemented with decorative stitching and embroidery in a different color in white, as well as the additional interior package with door panels in leather/Race-Tex, which is also subject to a surcharge. The window triangles and door sill panels were painted in carbon and the door opener in high-gloss black, the wheels were painted to match in silver.
The legend lives particularly luxuriously in this Cayman GT4 RS.
Conclusion: The 718 Cayman GT4 RS basically stands on its own pedestal. Like the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder, the GT4 RS will also impress in connoisseur garages, but it will win laurels on the Nordschleife and Hockenheimring. In the version in the special color Carrara white metallic, from southern Germany and first owner with demonstrable VAT and a mileage of only 1,100 km, this car is already in pole position among its peers.
Not least because this example was probably configured with the most extensive equipment that money could buy. This is also reflected in the new price at the time of just under €190,000 and means a surcharge for special and CXX options, which amount to just under €50,000.
With these attributes and the fact that it is probably the last of its kind, this vehicle is well on its way to becoming a future high-end classic. This example will provide its new owner with long-term (driving) pleasure, especially due to the maximum equipment packages, and will have sustainable development potential.
