Porsche built the 356 from 1948 to 1965 – the last and strongest stage of evolution was the Carrera 2000 GS with 130 hp (the so-called Fuhrmann engine). Ernst Fuhrmann, who later became chairman of the board, originally designed this unit only for motorsport. The engine was correspondingly elaborately developed. It had, among other things, double ignition (2 ignition distributors) and the camshafts were driven by vertical shafts. The Carrera 2 was also the first production Porsche with disc brakes!
