Due to a clerical error, the vehicle was actually completed and delivered new with a Normal 60bhp engine, s/n 606864 on November 13th, 1961 and then exported to the States arriving in early January of 1962.
Upon being advised that his new Porsche was completed with a Normal engine, Mr. Carmack insisted that prior to taking delivery and competing payment, the error be corrected in his favor. As such both Cutler Motors and Brumos contacted the Porsche Factory and a correct Super 90 engine was ordered and shipped to Florida for installation in Mr. Carmack’s Roadster. The repair work, corrections and installation of this Super 90 engine was completed by April of 1962.
On April 25th, 1962, Mary C. Cutler on behalf of John Carmack signed the sales contract and completed payment for Mr. Cormack’s new Super 90, Twin-Grill Roadster. (Please see photos of these records in the gallery.)
The total invoice price for the vehicle and all fees was $4,592.12 however the invoice while noting a second set of seats and chrome rims, noted that Michelin tires and seatbelts were not available or installed.
The Porsche KARDEX internal records were further updated on December 5th, 1962 noting that the incorrect, Normal engine was replaced with the Super 90 engine, s/n 804959. In 1969 the Super 90 engine was removed but stored inadequately damaging the cylinder barrels and pistons. Another Porsche Factory Super 90 New/Old stock engine with engine No. 812427 was ordered and then installed. (Mr. Carmack was able to arrange and obtain this new engine as he was partners at the time with the regional Porsche dealer in Indiana.) At the same time, a set of late 356 Disc Brakes were also installed. This Super 90 engine and the disc brakes both remain fitted to the car to this day. Despite the original recorded engine changes, the original Typ. 741 gear box, s/n 50729 also still remains fitted to the car to this day as completed new by Porsche in December of 1961
In June of 1971, Mr. Carmack sold his treasured Porsche to the second owner, Mr. Thomas Campbell Farnam of Alexandria, Virginia. The car remained with him over the next forty-four years until being sold to a European collector in 2015 at which time the car was entrusted to Wayne Baker’s Personalized Autohous in San Diego, California for a comprehensive and complete restoration.
The restoration was started on late in 2015 and completed three years later in 2018. Total direct expenses invoiced by Personalized Authohous exceeded $145,000 USD. Another $12,500 was invoiced out to Autos International who completed the interior and soft top as well as additional outside invoices for various parts and labor.
During the restoration and after the complete rebuild and careful tuning of the engine, it was fully dyno-tested and recorded as producing 80.9bhp at 4,963rpm and a speed of 88mph at the rear wheels. Corrected, this was 97.08bhp at the flywheel.
A total of just 1,271 sorting and set up miles have been added to this Porsche since the completion of the restoration.
After a comprehensive, multi-day inspection and test drive, there were no known cosmetic or mechanical defects found.
