Max Hoffman's good instinct for the automotive needs of his customers was responsible for the creation of a Porsche legend. Hoffman demanded from Zuffenhausen a light, open and inexpensive sports car. The car should be efficient and have the lowest possible air resistance. Ferry Porsche took up Hoffman's suggestion and the Porsche 356 Speedster was born.

The Hoffman sales organization offered the new sporty and fuel-efficient 356 model for US$2,995. The model impressed numerous customers from the start. Used in everyday life as a daily driver and on weekends for many also as sports equipment at racing events that were taking place all over the country at the time.

The vehicle in detail

The example presented here was delivered on January 15, 1958 as a Porsche 356 A 1600 Super Speedster to the importer Auto Germa in Bologna, Italy. From there the car went to the USA. As optional equipment, the first owner chose a pontoon mirror, US bumpers and sealed beam headlights. According to the official Porsche certificate, the 356 was delivered in the rare fjord green exterior color with beige synthetic leather.

The 1600 Super engine has had its power increased from the original 60 hp / 44 kW in the 1600 engine to 75 hp / 55 kW with higher compression. This led to significantly better driving pleasure.

In the 1980s, the American Jim Johnston bought the vehicle and had it extensively restored in 2005 by passionate Porsche enthusiasts in the USA on what was obviously a very good original substance. The work was extensively documented.

In 2012, the car was then imported to Europe by a German collector.

Only 16% of the built Porsche 356 Speedsters were factory-fitted with the more powerful 1600 Super engine. Of these 494 vehicles in total, only 6 vehicles were delivered in the Fjord Green exterior color shown here.
