The vehicle in detail

Introduced in 1954, the Porsche Speedster was crafted specifically to capture the attention of the American market through its performance-driven simplicity. Stripped of all unnecessary amenities, with even its cabin heating system an optional extra, the now-iconic Speedster established its formidable presence on both the road and the racetrack. It usually took a Speedster to beat a Speedster, with the heroic little sports car quickly cementing its place in the automotive canon.
Per a copy of its Kardex on file, this example, chassis 83411 was completed on 31 May 1957 finished in red over beige vinyl trim. Destined for sale via Max Hoffman’s pivotal New York dealership, the car was outfitted with a 1600 Normal engine, sealed-beam headlights, and USA bumpers. While details of its early life are sadly unknown, the car is documented to have been maintained regularly and displayed consistently prior to its acquisition by the consignor approximately two decades ago.

Now wearing a spectacular restoration, 83411 is finished in black over red leather trim and features a host of desirable appointments including a factory hardtop, polished Rudge-style wheels, period-correct lap belts, and a wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel. During the restoration, the car’s original, matching-numbers 1.6-liter engine (number 65767) was set aside in favor of a Porsche 912-based four-cylinder powerplant built by the technicians at Canepa of Scotts Valley, California. In addition to its original engine, 83411 is accompanied by a soft-top, tonneau cover, tool roll, and collection of service records.
Boasting a spectacular restoration with an engine built by some of the industry’s finest craftsmen, this 356 Speedster promises an exhilarating ownership experience for many miles to come.
