This beautiful, Meissen Blue Convertible D has been in our possession since 2001. It was re-imported in 2001 and was described by our agent in America with the following words: "I haven't found such a good 356 in a long time. The car is truly a very good, honest car."
The restoration, which began in 2021 and was completed in 2024, was therefore based on very good foundations. Countless pictures exist that very well document the condition and history of the vehicle, spanning more than 20 years, as well as the restoration itself. In 2021, the body was completely plastic-blasted due to a poor paint surface and minor rust spots, which is considered one of the most gentle paint stripping methods. Rust or body problems were barely apparent. Gaps and body alignment were good. The body was therefore rebuilt without any significant additional effort. The average paint layer thickness is 600 μm.
All body components are matching, meaning they have the correct numbering corresponding to the chassis number. The Convertible D is the only model whose bumpers are also numbered. The trunk lid, engine lid, doors, bumpers, and the convertible top frame are all correct.
This car is currently equipped with Speedster shells, which the restorer chose during the work. The vehicle also includes the correct comfort seats, which were also completely rebuilt.
Technically, everything is in very good condition. The entire electrical system was converted to 12V, which promises several advantages such as more battery capacity and greater reliability, especially during cold starts, and ensures brighter lights when driving at night. The braking system was converted to dual circuit for safety reasons, and the entire braking system was built with new or reconditioned parts.
The engine and transmission were inspected by our long-standing and trusted partner, Classic Power in Schorndorf. The carburetors were completely overhauled. Due to their good condition, the engine and transmission did not require a complete overhaul, merely sealing work.
The car currently sits on Technomagnesio rims. However, correctly stamped 4.5-inch rims are included in the vehicle's scope of delivery.
Pictures of the work, insights into the documentation, and other details are available upon request.
