This 1959 Porsche 356A coupe remained registered in California to its second owner for 47 years until it was acquired by the current owner’s late father in 2014 and subsequently refurbished over the next four years, including a repaint, rebuilds of the engine and transaxle, and replacement of the floors. The car has been refinished in Ivory over red leatherette and is powered by a modified flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle. Features include 15″ ventilated steel wheels, a Blaupunkt radio, a Les Leston steering wheel, a luggage rack, a cabin heater, and bucket seats. This 356A coupe is now offered on dealer consignment with a copy of the Kardex, a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the owner’s manual, service records, and a clean California title.

This Reutter-built example came finished from the factory in Silver Metallic and was repainted in Ivory in the 1960s and again in 2015, at which time rust repairs were performed on the fenders, door jambs, and door bottoms. Additional equipment includes a rear luggage rack, bumper overriders, wind wings, and dual side mirrors. Blemishes are shown up close in the gallery.

The vehicle in detail

The 15″ ventilated steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and are mounted with 185/65 Michelin tires that show date codes from 2023. The car was factory equipped with drum brakes at each corner. The interior was refurbished in the late 1980s and features fixed-back bucket seats and rear seats upholstered in red leatherette along with beige squareweave carpets. Interior appointments include a Blaupunkt radio, a cabin heater, a passenger-side grab handle, lap belts, and a body-color painted dashboard. The wiring harness and fuse panel were replaced in 2015.

The wood-rimmed Les Leston steering wheel frames a central 6k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and a combination gauge monitoring oil temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer has rolled over twice and shows 31k miles. The speedometer was repaired in 2014. Engine stamping P*75020* is shown above and a corresponding number is listed on the Porsche CoA.

The flat-four was rebuilt and modified in 2014, including the installation of JE pistons and cylinders, an aluminum oil cooler, 912-spec connecting rods, and a custom Schneider camshaft, which reportedly features 20 degrees of advance and 20% more lift and duration. The generator was replaced in 2022. Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle, which was rebuilt in 2014. The floor pans were also replaced that year.

The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity shows the factory colors and serial numbers along with a production completion date of July 8, 1959.
